Onwards to Cape Town

We flew back to Jo'burg to catch our 25 hour overnight sleeper train to Cape Town. No, not the famous but exorbitant Blue Train but the Premier Classe sleeper, still a touch of class and really comfortable beds plus fully catered at a very sensible price.

Cape Town

It is easy to forget when you are in central Cape Town that you are only a few miles away from the Cape beaches on one side and the Table Mountain National Park on the other. That is, until you see the surf dudes literally just off the beach mingling with the suits in the cafes. Oh yes, and look up to see the iconic Table top above you.

And baby came too: Paddle boarding on canal at V&A Waterfront

It really is a wonderful city, vibrant, fun, with history, stonking food and wine at bloody marvellous prices at the current exchange rate (almost 18 rand to the pound) and with access to the sea and great countryside on your doorstep. You also feel far more secure than in Jo'burg although most properties still have an incredible amount of security: we had nine keys for our self-catering apartment plus alarm codes.

Even God needs razor wire!

We had two good treks, up to Lion's Head and of course up to the Table top itself, both done in brilliant sunshine, and a trip down the Cape to Simonstown and Boulder's bay to see the African penguins. We travelled there on a rather grungy train, which for a while trundles along the coast almost literally in the waves.

On the rainy day we had, we went to the Planetarium. As usual it all makes sense until you look up the next night and try and make out the constellations above.
